Earth Day Activities 2010

There are several local events that you can join in on to help participate in Earth Day festivities. Earth Day 2010 is officially on Thursday, April 22 but many activities occur on the following weekend.

WHAT: White Point Nature Preserve weeding and habitat restoration event
WHEN: Saturday, April 24th, 9am-12pm
WHERE: White Point Nature Preserve,
DETAILS: Closed toes shoes required. Bottled water is provided but in an effort to reduce plastic waste, we encourage you to bring your own water. Day cancelled in event of rain.

WHAT: Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Beach Cleanup
WHEN: Saturday, April 24, 2010, Cleanup from 8–10am
WHERE: Point Fermin State Marine Park and Cabrillo Beach
DETAILS: Start early with our coastal cleanup. Clear litter from Point Fermin State Marine Park and Cabrillo inner and outer beaches. Bring old tennis shoes to recycle. Learn how to compost. Parking is $1/hour.

WHAT: Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Earth Day Fair
WHEN: Saturday, April 24, 2010, 10am–4pm
WHERE: Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, 3720 Stephen M. White Dr.
DETAILS: The fair will include games, interactive displays and booths with information on the environment and conservation. There also will be music, food and a gift shop. Get tips on making your home eco-friendly. Admission is free; parking is $1/hour.

WHAT: Free Shade Trees
WHEN: Now!
DETAILS: Complete an online workshop (about 20 minutes), submit your completed tree order and site plan and LADWP will deliver the trees to your home; you then plant and care for them. Available to residential, apartment owners and non-residential electric customer of LADWP only.

Clear out your old electronics and help raise money for San Pedro Girl Scout Troops 9535 and 11955 this weekend at their e-waste recycling fundraiser, Saturday April 17 managed by eGreenRecycle.

WHAT: Girl Scout E-Waste Recycling Fundraiser
WHEN: Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 10am to 1pm
WHERE: Albertsons, 28090 S. Western Ave, San Pedro
DETAILS: Bring computers, monitors, laptops, TVs, printers, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, cameras, keyboards and scanners (no appliances or batteries).

PRA Annual Meeting, May 11

Angels Gate Open Studios, May 16

Save the Date! The Angels Gate Cultural Center will be holding their annual open studios next month. They usually have lots of activities for families and some very interesting artwork just a hop, skip and a jump away from home.

Park Burglaries

The Harbor Area crime report posted by the Daily Breeze showed some problems at White Point Bluff Park, Point Fermin Park and Cabrillo Beach. Keep your eyes and ears open and report any suspicious activity.

• Park burglary. 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. March 18, county Department of Beaches and Harbors park/playground, 1900 block of West Paseo del Mar. Someone forced entry into the facility through the front door and took unspecified supplies/equipment.

• Park burglary. March 17-18, Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility, 3600 block of South Gaffey Street. Someone broke into the front door of the building and took tools.

• Park burglary. 9:20 p.m. March 16, Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks park/playground, 3800 block of Stephen M. White Drive. Someone entered the facility through an unlocked rear window, ransacked the place and took clothing and other unspecified property.
